3 Best Rugged Smartphones with Thermal and Night Vision Reviews
1. Doogee V31GT – Our Top Choice
PROS
- Good range and resolution for thermal vision
- 24MP night vision camera
- Remarkable 50MP main camera
- Rated for MIL-SPEC 810H
- IP68/69K waterproof
- Dimensity 1080 octa-core processor

CONS
- Long-range thermal imaging isn’t very useful
DOOGEE V31GT is a relatively new model, which according to the company, comes with its flagship 5G thermal imaging system. A few other features and good user experience make this phone worthy of our top pick in this category.
For its thermal imaging camera, the phone uses a InfiRay Thermal Vision sensor with a range of 5°F to 1022°F (-15°C to 550°C). The thermal detection range goes all the way to 1000 meters, which unfortunately isn’t as impressive as it sounds.
Thermal imaging for this phone, or for that matter, most phones in general, doesn’t have a very high resolution. At a thousand meters, even an elephant might register as just a few pixels that could be very hard to notice. While the phone smoothes it out for better viewing quality, the inherent limitations of the sensor remain.
As such, while thermal vision remains useful for shorter distances, it’s spotty after that. Even if the sensor picks the temperature of something far away, it’s meaningless if the user can’t see that.
Apart from thermal vision, the phone also offers night vision, for which it employs a 24 MP camera. The night vision camera works pretty well and offers clean imagery. This shouldn’t be confused with the “night mode” that Doogee likes to push forward as a big feature of this phone. In this case, night mode is simply photography in low light conditions, where the main camera adjusts to the lower light setting.
Doogee V31GT comes with a 50 MP main camera, 8 MP fusion camera, and a 32 MP front camera. All these camera systems work well and create a good experience.
The phone offers good picture quality, and there is utility for personal and professional requirements with night vision and thermal vision. I find both these features quite useful when backpacking or the outdoors.
As with many rugged phones, Doogee V31GT puts up a Kevlar pattern at its back. This is just a pattern and the material is plastic. Although, this phone still inspires confidence with its rugged construction. It feels hefty and solid in the hands.
It is rated for MIL-STD-810H, along with IP68/69K. That signifies it is dustproof, waterproof, drop-resistant, and can stay operational in tough environmental conditions.
Other notable features of this phone include 6.6-inch display, 10800 mAh battery with 66W fast charging, NFC, 5G connectivity, Android 13, Dimensity 1080 octa-core processor, 12 GB RAM, and 256 GB internal memory. There’s room for two nano sims, but if you want to use a microSD
card, you’d have to skip one sim.
Overall, Doogee V31GT shows a remarkable blend of features at a justifiable price. It handles thermal and night vision quite well, offers good audio quality, and remains fun to use!

2. AGM G2 Guardian – Best Premium Rugged Phone with THERMAL and NIGHT VISION
PROS
- Good range and resolution for thermal vision
- 20MP night vision camera
- Remarkable 108MP main camera
- Rated for MIL-SPEC 810G
- IP68/69K waterproof
- Powerful Qualcomm QCM6490 processor
- Good 7000 mAh battery with quick charging and wireless charging
- Overall good performance.
CONS
- Expensive
- Odd placement of the speaker
- Doesn’t fully exploit the Qualcomm QCM6490 SoC.
AGM G2 Guardian is a rugged phone that shows some rugged ambition. I call this ambitious, because though rugged phones can get expensive, this one pushes further and comes close to the territory of Apple and Samsung flagships.
That’s a tough segment to be in and there’s a lot to prove. And that’s easier said than done.
However, the phone does show some interesting qualities of its own.
It features a 256*192 resolution thermal camera. At this point, I would have expected it to offer a better resolution, but this one’s not too shabby either. For whatever reason, AGM has chosen to make the thermal vision look into the distance.
Its range is 500 yards and it does manage to pick up heat signatures from all that distance.
However, the sensor resolution plays spoilsport. So objects at a distance, even if picked up by sensors, may not be clearly visible to the user. These idiosyncrasies aside, the thermal imaging system is a useful addition.
The 20 MP night vision camera does its job rather well. It forms a clear image and can record good-quality videos. The main camera is similarly impressive and can go all the way to 108 MP,there’s also a 2 MP macro camera, while the front camera hits 32 MP.
With all the impressive work that it has done with the cameras, this smartphone can still fall short. For whatever reason, AGM decided that the dominant position on the G2 Guardian needs to go to the speaker.
The cameras are arranged around this speaker and that causes photography to be somewhat non-intuitive. Or at least, it takes time getting used to the off-balance camera arrangement.
The speaker gets very loud and can reach 109 dB. While that can have its uses in some conditions, it’s very likely to be an annoyance. At least, the speaker isn’t worth the hallowed spot that’s been bestowed upon it.
One aspect where this phone shines is its use of the Qualcomm QCM6490 SoC. This octa-core processor is way better than the Helio G99 or Mediatek 900 processors that power most rugged phones.
These processing capabilities shine through when using the phone. It works quite flawlessly and most tasks get handled with relative ease. Even heavy gaming doesn’t take a toll on the phone’s performance and there’s no noticeable lag.
Other notable features include WiFi6, Bluetooth, 7000 mAh battery with fast charging, wireless charging, NFC, 12 GB RAM, 256 GB internal storage, 6.58-inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass, and 5G communication.
As a rugged phone, it comes with MIL-STD-810G certification. For this price, I’d have preferred the slightly higher 810H standard, but this works as well. The phone is also rated IP68/69K dustproof and waterproof, and can survive being submerged in 1.5m water depth for 30 minutes.
Overall, AGM G2 Guardian is a remarkable rugged phone with good performance and impressive features. However, it is on the expensive side and that can put a question on its value.

3. OUKITEL WP21 – Best Budget Rugged Phone with THERMAL and NIGHT VISION
PROS
- High-resolution InfiRay thermal vision
- 20MP night vision camera
- Rated for MIL-SPEC 810H
- IP68/69K waterproof
- Almost no bloatware
- Big 9800 mAh battery with fast charging
- Good set of features.
CONS
- Heavy and thick, even for a rugged phone
- Can struggle with high-demand applications like gaming.
OUKITEL WP21 Ultra is remarkable as a well-priced rugged smartphone that can handle quality thermal and night vision cameras. Of course, the added implication here is that the regular cameras of this device show some gumption as well.
The thermal sensor for the camera offers 256*192 resolution, which is amongst the best available for phone cameras. It has a 25 Hz refresh rate and a temperature detection range of 14°F to 1022°F (-10°C to 550°C).
That’s quite a decent range for a phone camera handling thermal vision. And of course, there is plenty of room for application here, ranging from hobbyists to some professional use. I guess having thermal vision for your phone adds a touch of novelty and utility.
A similar logic can be carried on to the night vision camera. OUKITEL WP21 Ultra Rugged Smartphone comes with a 20MP night vision camera, which is aided by two IR LEDs. The night vision is decent and allows users to capture images and videos.
The main camera here is 64 MP and it shoots decent images. While it won’t rival an iPhone, it’s still a good experience for the price and features offered. The 20 MP front camera is fairly good as well.
While it works for a good camera experience, this is a rugged phone and stays true to its origins. I like the little touch with metal plates at the sides of the phone, but of course, there’s more to being rugged. The casing is well-built and does a good job protecting the phone.
OUKITEL WP21 Ultra Rugged Smartphone is certified at MIL-STD-810H. It can operate in tough environmental conditions like extreme temperatures and high moisture. It’s also resistant to a drop from a height of up to 1.5 meters.
For waterproofing, the phone is rated IP68/69K. This means it can withstand being submerged in water at a depth of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. It can withstand jets of water directed at the phone, so being exposed even to heavy rain shouldn’t be a problem.
Another defining feature of this phone is its battery. It comes with a 9800 mAh Lithium polymer battery and supports 66W fast charging. With a battery like that, it makes sense to have decent fast-charging options. Oukitel says the battery can last 68 hours for conversation, and longer for normal use.
Other notable features include 6.78-inch FHD touchscreen, NFC, Helio G99 octa-core processor, 12 GB RAM, 256 GB internal memory, and room for up to 2TB microSD card.
Overall, OUKITEL WP21 is a feature-rich device with an attractive
price tag that works pretty well with thermal and night vision, showing good-quality of measurement and display.
