Before buying any digital radio: check the repeaters near you
This matters more than which digital system has the biggest worldwide network. If your local club maintains an active DMR repeater and everyone you want to talk to uses DMR, buying a premium D-STAR radio because it looks better on paper solves the wrong problem.

Two time slots and talkgroups
DMR is based on the ETSI Digital Mobile Radio standard. A 12.5 kHz DMR channel is divided into two alternating TDMA time slots, allowing two independent communication paths.
Amateur DMR adds the operating concepts most beginners notice: digital IDs, color codes, time slots, talkgroups, zones and codeplugs.
Best reason to choose it: the DMR infrastructure and operators you want to use are active where you operate.
Amateur-focused open digital protocol
D-STAR — Digital Smart Technology for Amateur Radio — is an open digital communications protocol established by the Japan Amateur Radio League.
Its digital voice system uses a different air interface from DMR and System Fusion, and D-STAR repeaters can connect through Internet gateways for regional and worldwide communication.
Best reason to choose it: your local infrastructure uses D-STAR and you value its repeater, callsign and gateway workflow.
Yaesu C4FM with easy analog coexistence
System Fusion is Yaesu’s digital amateur-radio implementation using C4FM 4-level FSK for digital voice and data.
A major practical feature is AMS — Automatic Mode Select — which can recognize C4FM or conventional analog FM on compatible radios and switch receive mode automatically.
Best reason to choose it: local Yaesu Fusion repeaters are active and you want a relatively straightforward C4FM/FM operating workflow.
DMR, D-STAR and System Fusion do not directly interoperate
This is the most important sentence on this page. All three systems carry digital voice, but they do not use the same over-the-air digital protocol.

So an AnyTone operating in DMR mode cannot directly hold a digital RF QSO with an FT5DR operating in C4FM, and neither can directly decode an ID-52A PLUS transmitting D-STAR.
Internet gateways and third-party linking systems can sometimes bridge otherwise separate networks, but that is external infrastructure. Do not buy a radio assuming the three modes are natively compatible.
The three digital-voice choices in detail
1. AnyTone AT-D878UVII Plus
The AT-D878UVII Plus makes sense here because it is not merely a cheap radio that happens to transmit DMR. It has enough memory and contact capacity to grow into a large DMR configuration without immediately fighting the limits of the radio.
AnyTone specifies 4,000 channels, 10,000 talkgroups and 500,000 digital contacts. It operates on both VHF and UHF, supports analog FM as well as DMR, and provides up to 7 W on VHF and 6 W on UHF. GPS, APRS and Bluetooth add useful functions beyond basic digital voice.
The reason I would not call DMR the automatic beginner choice is the setup. To program a DMR repeater correctly, you may need the frequency, color code, time slot and talkgroup in addition to the ordinary repeater information an analog radio needs. Then those channels are normally organized into zones and scan lists.
That becomes easy once the structure makes sense, but it is a real learning step. If you already know your local area is DMR-heavy, though, the 878 gives you enough capability that you are unlikely to outgrow the radio simply because your codeplug becomes larger.
Best for: operators whose nearby repeaters, club or hotspot use DMR and who want a full-featured handheld rather than the cheapest DMR entry.
Skip it if: your local digital activity is D-STAR or System Fusion and you are choosing DMR only because somebody said it has a big network.

The ID-52A PLUS is the radio I would use to represent D-STAR because the radio and the network workflow are designed around each other. It supports ordinary analog FM as well as D-STAR simplex, local repeater, regional and Internet-gateway operation.
Its DR — D-STAR Repeater — function is particularly useful for someone who does not want to think of every digital contact as a manually built channel. With the internal GPS and an updated repeater list, the radio can present nearby repeaters based on location. From there the operator chooses where the call should go.
The PLUS version also modernizes the connectivity. It has USB-C, and Terminal/Access Point mode can connect to a compatible Android device over Bluetooth. That gives you another route into the D-STAR network where the required Internet and gateway conditions are available.
It also supports two simultaneous DV receive signals, a 2.3-inch color display, waterfall display, integrated GPS and IPX7 weather protection. Those are valuable features, but they do not make D-STAR useful in a neighborhood where nobody operates it.
Best for: operators with reachable D-STAR repeaters who want Icom’s GPS/DR workflow and D-STAR gateway features.
Skip it if: you are paying for the radio before confirming that D-STAR is the digital ecosystem you will actually use.
3. Yaesu FT5DR
The FT5DR is the System Fusion choice because it combines Yaesu’s C4FM digital system with a very capable everyday analog handheld. Yaesu rates it at 5 W on 2 meters and 70 centimeters and gives it two independent receivers, including simultaneous C4FM standby.
The feature that matters most for a beginner is probably AMS — Automatic Mode Select. On compatible operation, the radio can recognize whether the incoming signal is conventional FM or C4FM digital and select the appropriate receive mode. That makes mixed analog/digital use feel less like operating two separate radios.
The FT5DR also includes GPS, APRS, a 2,200 mAh battery, microSD support and a wide receive range. For Internet-linked System Fusion operation, it supports Yaesu’s WIRES-X Portable Digital Node function when used with the required computer and cable setup.
The limitation is value. You do not need the FT5DR merely to key a local C4FM repeater. If your requirement is basically “Fusion + analog FM in a dependable handheld,” the FT-70DR is a much simpler way into the same digital voice ecosystem.
Best for: active Yaesu System Fusion areas where you also value APRS, GPS and a more capable dual-receive handheld.
Skip it if: you only need basic local C4FM/analog operation and would rather spend the difference on an antenna or mobile station.
Want System Fusion without the FT5DR feature set?
The Yaesu FT-70DR is still the simpler C4FM/FM route. It gives you 5 W System Fusion digital voice plus conventional analog FM without charging for the FT5DR’s APRS, large touch interface and more advanced dual-receiver features.

1. Choose for your local repeaters, not for the Internet map
A worldwide linked network looks impressive, but your handheld still needs an RF path into that network. For normal repeater use, that means reaching a compatible local repeater or another compatible access point.
Start with RepeaterBook and then confirm with the local club. The mode with the most activity in your area is usually more useful than the mode with the longest feature list.
2. All three can operate without the Internet
Digital voice itself is still radio. Two compatible radios can communicate directly where simplex operation is allowed, and a local digital repeater can repeat compatible RF traffic.
The Internet is what adds the wide-area network layer: D-STAR gateways and reflectors, WIRES-X nodes and rooms, or the network services used with amateur DMR systems.
If the Internet fails, that does not magically disable every local digital RF contact. Exactly what remains available depends on the repeater or node configuration.
3. Analog FM remains useful
One reason I chose these three radios is that none forces you into digital-only operation. The AnyTone supports analog FM, the ID-52A PLUS supports FM alongside D-STAR, and the FT5DR supports analog FM alongside C4FM.
That matters because the ordinary analog repeater may still be the most active machine in your town. Buying digital capability should expand what you can use rather than removing the basic analog path.
4. DMR asks you to understand more programming concepts up front
A normal analog repeater channel needs frequency, offset and usually a tone. DMR adds parameters such as the repeater’s color code, time slot and talkgroup.
The radio then organizes large groups of digital channels into zones, scan lists and contacts. That configuration is commonly called a codeplug.
None of this is difficult once you understand the model, but it explains why somebody can buy an excellent DMR radio and still hear nothing on the first evening.

5. D-STAR’s DR function changes the programming experience
D-STAR-capable Icom radios such as the ID-52A PLUS can work from repeater lists rather than requiring the operator to think of every network path as another manually constructed channel.
With the radio’s GPS, DR mode can identify nearby compatible repeaters. That does not eliminate learning D-STAR callsign and gateway operation, but it can make the local-repeater starting point more approachable.
6. System Fusion’s AMS is useful in mixed analog/digital areas
Yaesu’s Automatic Mode Select can recognize incoming analog FM or C4FM digital and adjust the receive mode automatically.
This is particularly convenient where a System Fusion repeater or your operating habits involve both conventional FM and C4FM. It does not make the FT5DR understand DMR or D-STAR.
7. WIRES-X is not another digital radio mode
C4FM is the RF digital voice technology. WIRES-X is Yaesu’s Internet-linking system for connecting compatible nodes, repeaters and rooms.
Those terms are often used together, but they describe different layers of the system. You can use C4FM locally without making every QSO a WIRES-X Internet QSO.
8. A hotspot is an access point, not an RF range amplifier
A personal hotspot can be useful where you cannot reach a compatible digital repeater but want access to an Internet-linked amateur network.
The handheld normally talks only a short RF path to the hotspot; the Internet carries the long-distance part. That is fundamentally different from installing a better antenna and extending your direct RF coverage.
9. Digital does not make antenna physics disappear
Your ability to reach a local digital repeater still depends on frequency, terrain, antenna performance, location and transmitter power.
If the stock handheld antenna cannot make a reliable RF path to the repeater, changing from analog FM to a digital protocol does not create another ten miles of coverage.

10. APRS is a separate feature from the digital voice mode
The FT5DR and AT-D878UVII Plus can offer APRS functionality, while the ID-52A PLUS has its own D-STAR/D-PRS location features.
Do not interpret an APRS logo as meaning that two radios share the same digital voice protocol. Position reporting and digital voice are separate buying criteria.
Local RF first. Internet linking second.
A useful way to understand digital voice is to separate the system into two layers:
DMR radio advertises AES encryption? Leave it off on U.S. amateur frequencies.
Some DMR hardware is derived from commercial-radio platforms and may advertise encryption features. That does not make encrypted voice appropriate for normal amateur-radio operation.
Current FCC Part 97 prohibits amateur transmissions containing messages encoded for the purpose of obscuring their meaning, except where specifically permitted by the rules. Use the radio’s normal unencrypted amateur DMR mode on U.S. ham bands.
What to avoid
Do not buy “a digital radio.” Buy the digital system you can use.
Avoid choosing from the word digital on the box, assuming DMR/D-STAR/Fusion radios talk directly to one another, or spending heavily on a network with no useful activity near you.
Also avoid treating Internet-linked worldwide coverage as proof that your handheld can reach the access repeater from your house. The first hop is still RF.
Check the repeaters, talk to the local club, then choose the ecosystem.

Can DMR talk directly to D-STAR or Yaesu System Fusion?
No. They use different over-the-air digital protocols. A radio operating only DMR cannot directly decode D-STAR or C4FM System Fusion, and the reverse is also true.
External network bridges may connect some systems in certain configurations, but that is not native radio-to-radio compatibility.
Which digital voice mode is best for a beginner?
Start with whichever system has useful local activity. System Fusion’s AMS can make mixed FM/C4FM operation straightforward, while Icom’s D-STAR DR mode simplifies finding compatible repeaters. DMR generally asks you to learn more programming parameters first.
Do I need the Internet to use DMR, D-STAR or System Fusion?
Not for every contact. Compatible radios can communicate over RF directly, and compatible repeaters can provide local RF operation.
Internet connectivity is used when you want network-linked features such as distant gateways, nodes, rooms or talkgroups.
Can a digital ham radio still use analog repeaters?
The three radios recommended here can. The AT-D878UVII Plus supports analog FM alongside DMR, the ID-52A PLUS supports FM alongside D-STAR, and the FT5DR supports FM alongside C4FM.
Do I need a hotspot for digital ham radio?
No. If you can reach a compatible repeater or only want direct radio-to-radio operation, you may not need one.
A hotspot is most useful when you want access to a compatible Internet-linked network but cannot conveniently reach the relevant repeater.
Which has the longest range: DMR, D-STAR or System Fusion?
I would not choose among them by a promised range advantage. For a handheld reaching a repeater, antenna, elevation, terrain, frequency, transmitter power and the repeater site dominate the practical link.
What is a DMR codeplug?
It is the programmed configuration that organizes the radio’s frequencies, DMR channels, color codes, time slots, talkgroups, contacts, zones, scan lists and related settings.
