Choose the Icom IC-7300MK2 if digital and remote integration matter most

The new IC-7300MK2 deserves its own decision branch because its strongest advantage is not simply receiver performance. It is how cleanly the radio can become the center of a modern computer-connected shack.

It is a 100 W HF/6 m SDR with a built-in automatic antenna tuner, 4.3-inch touchscreen and real-time spectrum/waterfall display. The important changes are around the back: USB-C provides two virtual COM ports plus audio input/output, so applications such as FT8 and logging software can operate simultaneously through one USB connection.

Icom also added Ethernet. With its RS-BA1 software, the radio can be operated across a home network or remotely without requiring a separate shack computer to act as the radio server. HDMI output lets you put the waterfall and radio interface on a larger monitor, while dedicated receive-antenna IN/OUT connectors make external receive antennas, band-pass filters and preamps much easier to integrate.

That makes the IC-7300MK2 particularly attractive if your planned shack already includes a computer, FT8, logging, remote operation or a large external display.

I would not automatically choose it over the FT-710, however. The Yaesu remains an excellent 100 W first station with a strong receiver, internal tuner and USB audio interface. Decide which operating workflow matters to you instead of buying whichever radio was released most recently.

Best first full-power HF station

1. Yaesu FT-710 AESS

If someone has just upgraded to General and tells me they want one radio to sit in the shack and explore SSB, CW and digital HF, the FT-710 AESS is the easiest recommendation here. It gives you the full 100 W class of HF operation without requiring you to buy a more expensive contest-oriented radio before you even know whether contesting will interest you.

The receiver is one of the strongest reasons to choose it. Yaesu uses an SDR architecture with the same family of high-resolution A/D and FPGA technology found higher in its lineup, dedicated amateur-band filtering and extensive DSP tools for reducing nearby interference. A 4.3-inch touchscreen and spectrum display make it much easier to see where activity is rather than tuning blindly across a quiet band.

For a first station, the supporting features are equally important. The automatic tuner is already inside the radio, the USB Type-B connection supports CAT, transmit control and audio input/output, and Yaesu includes an FT8 preset. That removes several pieces of external hardware from a first digital-mode setup.

The limitation is ergonomics. Yaesu gives you a lot of control and therefore more layers to learn. If simple touchscreen operation and network/USB integration matter more than squeezing maximum value from the receiver, compare it carefully with the IC-7300MK2 above.

Best for: a new General who wants one capable 100 W HF/6 m station for SSB, CW and digital modes.

Skip it if: true battery-powered portable operation is the primary goal or you already know you need the FTDX10’s more elaborate receiver.

2. Icom IC-705

The IC-705 should not be thought of as a cheaper or lower-ranking alternative to the FT-710. It solves a completely different problem: putting a sophisticated station into a small battery-powered package that you can genuinely carry into the field.

Its coverage is unusually broad for this page. In addition to HF and 6 meters, the IC-705 gives you multimode operation on 2 meters and 70 centimeters, including D-STAR. The 4.3-inch touchscreen includes a real-time spectrum scope and waterfall, while USB provides both radio control and audio. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and internal GPS add options that become particularly useful away from a permanent desk.

But its portability comes from QRP power levels. The supplied battery gives you a maximum of 5 W, while a 13.8 V external supply raises output to 10 W. Those power levels can produce excellent contacts with a good antenna, especially on CW and digital modes, but SSB becomes much more dependent on propagation and antenna efficiency than with a 100 W station.

There is also no automatic antenna tuner inside the IC-705. Icom sells the AH-705 as an external tuner, so include that or another suitable tuner in the station plan when your antenna requires matching.

Best for: POTA/SOTA-style operation, travel and anyone who specifically wants HF through 70 cm in one battery-powered multimode radio.

Skip it if: your actual priority is making easy SSB contacts from home. A 100 W radio is a much more forgiving first shack.

3. Yaesu FTDX10

The reason to move from the FT-710 to the FTDX10 is not simply that you want a more expensive radio. Buy it when receiver performance in difficult conditions is becoming part of the hobby itself.

Yaesu’s hybrid SDR architecture combines a narrow-band down-conversion receiver with a direct-sampling SDR used for the spectrum display. The narrow path gives Yaesu room to place 500 Hz, 3 kHz and 12 kHz crystal roofing filters ahead of much of the later signal processing. In practical terms, that architecture is aimed directly at the problem of a weak station sitting close to very strong signals.

You also get a larger 5-inch touchscreen, extensive IF DSP controls, an internal automatic tuner and more direct controls on the front panel. For an operator who spends hours chasing weak DX, working contests or learning how to manipulate filtering, those controls are useful rather than decorative.

They are also why I would not automatically give the FTDX10 to a new General. It is a larger, busier radio and you are paying for capabilities that casual SSB, FT8 and evening rag-chewing may never stress. The FT-710 gets a new operator onto essentially the same HF bands at the same 100 W class with less money committed to the radio itself.

Best for: active DXers, contest operators and stations where close-in strong-signal performance has become a real requirement.

Skip it if: you are building your first station and spending the difference would materially improve your antenna, feedline or power system.

Portable and compact are not the same thing

An FT-710 is reasonably compact, but it still needs an external 13.8 V power source, antenna and supporting equipment. Calling it “portable” because you can put it in a case misses the most important part of portable operating: everything else you must carry.

The IC-705 is portable by design because the battery is attached to the radio and the power requirement is dramatically lower. Conversely, if the radio is going to live on your desk every day, sacrificing 90–95 W merely to make the box easier to carry makes little sense.

How to choose the right HF radio

1. Decide whether this is a shack radio or a field radio first

This decision should happen before you compare receivers or displays. A permanent home station can tolerate a 20–30 A power supply, heavier transceiver and external equipment. A radio carried several miles into a park or summit cannot.

If the station will primarily live at home, a full 100 W radio such as the FT-710 gives you much more SSB margin. If field operation is the activity you actually want to pursue, the IC-705’s battery operation and low-power ecosystem become advantages rather than compromises.

2. 100 W is a much easier place to learn HF voice than QRP

Low-power operation is enormously rewarding, but it intentionally removes signal margin. On SSB, five or ten watts puts more responsibility on propagation, antenna efficiency and operator timing.

That is why I would not recommend the IC-705 as the default first HF transceiver simply because it is more versatile. If the goal is to sit down after passing General and start making voice contacts, 100 W is considerably more forgiving.

3. Receiver performance matters when strong signals are close

On an empty band, competent modern HF receivers can all sound impressive. The differences become more useful during a contest, pileup or crowded evening band when a weak station sits only a few kilohertz away from a much stronger signal.

This is where roofing filters, dynamic range and DSP controls start earning their keep. The FTDX10 is the pick here specifically because its hybrid design and narrow roofing filters are aimed at this difficult environment.

A beginner should still ask whether that problem exists in their operating plans. Spending more for receiver performance you rarely exploit can mean spending less on the antenna that would improve every contact.

4. Decide whether you want the antenna tuner inside the radio

The FT-710 and FTDX10 include automatic antenna tuners. The IC-7300MK2 does as well. The IC-705 does not.

An internal tuner is convenient with an antenna that is already reasonably close to a 50-ohm match, particularly when moving around a multiband antenna’s usable range. But an internal tuner is not a reason to ignore the antenna itself.

A tuner changes the impedance presented to the transmitter; it does not magically make a poor antenna radiate efficiently or remove high SWR from the feedline between a shack-end tuner and the antenna. See our antenna tuner guide before choosing a radio primarily for its ATU.

5. “Has USB” does not automatically mean “has USB audio”

This matters enormously if FT8 or another computer-based digital mode is part of the station.

The FT-710’s USB Type-B connection supports CAT operation, transmit control and audio input/output. The IC-705 also carries control and audio through USB. The IC-7300MK2 goes further with USB-C, two virtual COM ports and audio IN/OUT designed to support simultaneous applications.

Always check what the USB interface actually carries. A USB socket used only for CAT control can still leave you needing another sound interface for digital audio.

6. The display matters more after you have used a waterfall

A spectrum scope is not just decoration. It lets you see where a band is active, where a pileup is forming and where interference sits relative to the signal you are trying to hear.

The FT-710, FTDX10, IC-705 and IC-7300MK2 all give you modern spectrum and waterfall displays. What changes is the size and how much of the radio’s control philosophy is built around the screen.

If possible, try the interface before buying. Some operators strongly prefer Icom’s touchscreen workflow; others prefer Yaesu’s combination of screen and physical controls.

7. Budget for the station around the radio

A 100 W HF transceiver is not a complete station. It still needs a suitable DC supply, antenna, feedline and possibly grounding/bonding and lightning-protection equipment.

Power A 100 W HF radio generally belongs with a proper high-current 13.8 V DC supply rather than a small bench adapter.
Antenna The antenna will often change your results more than upgrading from one competent modern radio to another.
Feedline Choose 50-ohm coax for the actual run length and installation rather than simply buying the cheapest premade cable.

8. Your licence determines where you can transmit — not the radio

Modern HF radios can tune across much more spectrum than a particular licence class may authorize for transmission. A U.S. General-class licence opens extensive HF privileges, but individual frequency segments and permitted modes still matter.

Keep the current ARRL frequency allocation chart available rather than assuming that every frequency visible on the waterfall is available to you.

What to avoid

Do not build the station around the most expensive radio you can afford.

A great HF transceiver with an inadequate power supply and a poor antenna is still a disappointing station. Reserve enough of the budget for the equipment that connects the radio to the outside world.

I would also avoid choosing QRP solely because the radio is compact, assuming every USB connector carries digital audio, or buying a contest-oriented receiver when your real objective is relaxed SSB operation a few evenings per month.

The right HF radio is the one whose strengths match the way you will actually operate — not the one with the longest specification sheet.

What is the best HF radio for a new General?

For someone building a normal home station, my default choice is the Yaesu FT-710 AESS. It gives you 100 W, HF plus 6 m, a strong receiver, built-in tuner, waterfall display and a convenient digital-mode interface without requiring you to start with a contest-level radio.

Should my first HF radio be 100 watts?

For SSB voice operation, I generally prefer a 100 W-capable first station. You can always reduce the output when conditions allow, while a QRP-only radio cannot give you the extra margin when propagation or the antenna is working against you.

Is the Icom IC-705 a good first HF radio?

Yes when portable/QRP operation is specifically what you want. It is less ideal as the default first home SSB radio because its maximum output is 5 W on battery or 10 W externally and it does not include an internal antenna tuner.

Is the FTDX10 worth buying instead of the FT-710?

It is worth the step up when difficult receiver conditions are a regular part of your operating — DX pileups, contests and strong stations close to weak signals. For ordinary first-station use, the FT-710 leaves more of the budget available for the antenna and supporting equipment.

Should I choose the IC-7300MK2 or FT-710?

I would lean toward the FT-710 when value and receiver performance are the priorities. I would lean toward the IC-7300MK2 when its USB-C dual-COM/audio interface, Ethernet remote operation, HDMI output and receive-antenna connections solve specific station requirements.

What is the best HF radio for FT8?

The FT-710 already provides USB audio/CAT and an FT8 preset, making it a straightforward first digital station. The IC-7300MK2 becomes particularly attractive for a computer-heavy shack because its USB-C interface provides dual virtual COM ports and audio IN/OUT through a single cable.

Do I need a built-in antenna tuner?

No. A resonant antenna may not need one, and some antenna systems are better served by an external or remote tuner. An internal tuner is convenient, but it should not be used to hide a damaged or badly designed antenna system.
