The best affordable HF radios in detail
1. Yaesu FT-891
If you have just upgraded to General and your goal is to start making voice contacts rather than turning low-power operating into the challenge itself, the FT-891 is the radio I would choose from this group.
It provides 100 W on HF and 6 m in a compact chassis, with Yaesu’s traditional receiver architecture, a roofing filter and 32-bit IF DSP for reducing interference and noise. That matters on a busy HF band where several strong stations may sit close to the weak one you are actually trying to copy.
The important tradeoff is that the low radio price does not equal a complete station price. The FT-891 has no built-in automatic antenna tuner, and at full power Yaesu specifies roughly 23 A of transmit current. For home use, that means budgeting for a proper DC supply. For portable use, it means a substantially larger battery than the QRP radios below need.
Digital modes also need planning. The USB connection can handle CAT control, but the FT-891 does not provide the convenient built-in USB audio interface found on many larger modern base radios. If FT8 will be a major part of your operating, include the audio-interface hardware in your total budget.

2. Xiegu G90
The G90 is the radio I would choose when the entire station budget matters more than simply maximizing transmitter power. Its 20 W output is substantially below the FT-891’s full-power class, but it gives you several things the Yaesu makes you add separately.
The most important is the built-in automatic antenna tuner. The G90’s tuner has a wide matching range, which is genuinely useful when you are experimenting with portable wire antennas or a multiband antenna whose impedance is not perfect everywhere. You also get a real-time spectrum scope and waterfall, an SWR scanner and a detachable control panel.
The lower output also changes the supporting station. Xiegu specifies a maximum transmit current of about 6 A, so the DC supply or portable battery can be much smaller than what a full-power 100 W rig requires. That makes the G90 particularly attractive when “budget” includes everything needed to actually get on the air.
Twenty watts is enough to make real HF contacts, but it asks more from propagation and your antenna, particularly on SSB. It also stops at 30 MHz, so this is not the choice if 6 m operation is important. For computer digital modes, plan on an appropriate audio interface such as the DE-19 rather than assuming the supplied CAT/firmware cable also carries your transmit and receive audio.

3. Xiegu X6100
The X6100 is the radio for someone whose definition of “portable” really means walking away from the car or shack. It combines the radio, rechargeable battery, automatic tuner, spectrum display and computer interface into one compact unit.
With external DC power it produces up to 10 W; on the internal battery it operates at 5 W. It covers HF plus 6 m, provides a 4-inch color spectrum display and includes an onboard USB serial interface with a sound card. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth add further flexibility, particularly for field and digital-mode experimentation.
This is also why I prefer the X6100 over simply recommending the absolute cheapest 5 W QRP box. A new operator gets the visual feedback of a spectrum display, an internal tuner, an SWR scanner and fewer separate pieces to remember when leaving home.
But low power is not magic. Five or ten watts can work extremely well, especially with CW and efficient digital modes, but SSB contacts become more dependent on propagation, antenna efficiency and patience. If your primary goal after passing General is simply to experience successful HF voice contacts, I would still start with the FT-891.

Portable does not automatically mean QRP
The FT-891 is physically compact and can absolutely be taken into the field. The difference is everything around it: a 100 W radio needs a much larger power source than an X6100 running 5–10 W.
So decide what “portable” means to you. If the radio travels from the house to a picnic table in the car, carrying a bigger battery may not matter. If the station goes in a backpack for several miles, the X6100’s integrated battery starts making far more sense.
How to choose your first affordable HF radio
1. Decide between full power and QRP before comparing features
This is the decision that changes everything else. A 100 W radio gives a new SSB operator more signal margin when propagation is weak or the antenna is less than ideal. A 20 W radio reduces power requirements and can still make plenty of contacts. A 5–10 W QRP radio makes the station dramatically easier to carry but turns low power into part of the challenge.
None is universally “better.” The mistake is buying a QRP radio because it looks compact and inexpensive, then discovering that your actual goal was easy evening SSB conversations from home.
2. Budget for the entire station, not only the transceiver
HF is where spending every dollar on the radio hurts the most. You still need an antenna, feedline, suitable DC power and sometimes a tuner. A cheaper radio connected to an efficient antenna is a better first station than a flagship radio attached to whatever wire was left in the budget.

3. Receiver performance matters when the band gets crowded
HF often puts a weak signal only a few kilohertz away from a very strong one. Filtering, dynamic range, noise reduction and usable controls matter far more in that situation than a long list of secondary receive bands.
The FT-891 uses a traditional conversion architecture with roofing filtering and IF DSP. The G90 and X6100 take SDR-based approaches and give you visual spectrum displays and adjustable filtering. Which style you prefer matters more after the novelty of the specification sheet wears off.
4. A built-in tuner is useful — but it does not fix a bad antenna
The G90 and X6100 include automatic antenna tuners; the FT-891 does not. That is a meaningful difference, especially for portable wire antennas or multiband operation.
But a tuner primarily helps the transmitter see an acceptable impedance. It does not turn a poor, lossy or badly positioned antenna into an efficient radiator. If the antenna itself is the problem, the correct fix is still the antenna.

5. Power-supply requirements change the real cost

6. Decide how important digital modes are
If FT8 and other computer-based modes are central to your plan, look beyond whether a radio merely has a USB socket. The FT-891’s USB connection handles control functions but does not provide the built-in USB audio interface found in many larger base radios.
The G90 normally uses an external digital/audio interface such as the DE-19. The X6100 is substantially more self-contained here because it has an onboard USB serial adapter and sound card.
7. Do you care about 6 meters?
The FT-891 and X6100 include 6 m amateur operation; the G90 is an HF 1.8–30 MHz radio. That should not automatically disqualify the G90, but it matters if 6 m is active in your area or is specifically one of the bands you want to explore.
8. Your licence privileges still determine where you can transmit
A transceiver’s tuning range is not a licence grant. U.S. General-class operators have substantial operating privileges across the HF bands, but mode and frequency-segment limits still apply.
Keep a current ARRL frequency allocation chart available rather than assuming every frequency the radio accepts is available for your mode and licence class.
What to avoid
Do not buy the HF radio first and leave the antenna for whatever money remains.
On HF, the antenna system can change your results more than moving from one competent transceiver to another. I would rather see a new General with a modest radio, an efficient wire antenna and a proper power setup than an expensive transceiver connected to a badly compromised antenna.
I would also avoid buying QRP solely because the radio is small. Five or ten watts is a legitimate and rewarding way to operate, but low-power SSB requires more patience than starting at 100 W.

Budget HF radio FAQ
Is 20 watts enough for HF?
Yes. Twenty watts can make contacts around the country and around the world when propagation and the antenna cooperate. Compared with 100 W, however, you have less margin when signals are weak, so antenna efficiency becomes even more important.
Should a beginner start with a 100 W HF radio?
If your main goal is ordinary SSB voice operation, I generally prefer starting with a 100 W-capable radio and simply reducing power when appropriate. It gives you more flexibility than beginning with QRP because the radio happened to be smaller.
Do I need an antenna tuner for HF?
Not when your antenna system already presents an acceptable match on the band you are using. A tuner becomes useful with antennas whose impedance varies across bands or frequencies, but it does not make an inefficient antenna efficient.
Can a General-class operator use all HF bands?
U.S. General-class operators have privileges on substantial portions of the major HF amateur bands, but exact band segments and permitted modes matter. Check the current FCC/ARRL frequency chart rather than assuming that the transceiver’s entire tuning range is authorized.
Can the Yaesu FT-891 run FT8?
Yes, but the built-in USB connection does not provide the radio’s transmit/receive audio as a USB sound card. Plan an appropriate audio interface in addition to CAT control if computer digital modes are part of your station.
Is the Xiegu X6100 a good first HF radio?
It can be an excellent first radio when portable/QRP operating is specifically your goal. If your priority is making SSB contacts as easily as possible from home, I would start with a full-power radio such as the FT-891 instead.
