1. Best Overall — Midland MXT575 + MXTA26 + NMO Mount
The MXT575 is the easiest 50-watt radio here to live with in a normal truck.
The main chassis can disappear under a seat, inside a console or behind trim while the display, channel controls, volume and PTT stay on the microphone.
That matters in a modern truck because dashboard space is already competing with phones, navigation, switches, cameras and other accessories.
Midland currently gives the MXT575 15 high-power GMRS channels, eight repeater channels, split repeater tones, wide/narrow bandwidth and NOAA Weather Scan and Alert.
The more important upgrade is outside the cab.
The MXTA26 is a 32-inch GMRS-specific NMO whip that Midland pre-tunes around 462 MHz. It is considerably more substantial than the small stock antenna supplied with the standard MXT575.
For highway travel, farms, ranches and wide-open terrain, this is the antenna I would pair with the radio.
For most trucks where drilling the cab roof is not desirable, I prefer the MXTA27 universal lip mount over making the included stock magnetic mount permanent.
It clamps to an appropriate hood or body seam, uses an NMO connection, and already includes 20 feet of RG-58U coax.
Midland also sells the MXT575VP4-WHIP bundle built around the same radio and MXTA26. That kit uses the MXTA23 bracket plus MXTA24 cable and is worth considering when available, but buying the components separately gives you more freedom to choose the mount that fits your truck.
Best for: everyday truck communication, highway convoys, farms, ranches, overlanding in relatively open terrain and buyers who want 50 W without a complicated interface.
Skip it if: you want extensive custom channel banks and PC programming, or your terrain strongly favors a lower-gain antenna pattern.
2. Best Budget — Radioddity DB25-G + Nagoya UT-72G
The DB25-G is the budget radio here because it gives you enough mobile power to make the external antenna worthwhile without forcing you into a full hardwired 50-watt installation.
Radioddity currently rates it for 25, 10 and 5 watts, gives it repeater support, 200 channels and wideband receive across VHF and UHF.
It also now supports CHIRP, which makes it more attractive than it was when programming required a more isolated manufacturer-software workflow.
The supplied vehicle power lead uses a 12-volt accessory/cigarette-lighter connection, so this is considerably easier to install than the 50-watt radios that I would normally hardwire properly.
The antenna is where this budget build avoids becoming false economy.
The UT-72G is specifically sold as the GMRS version of Nagoya’s magnetic mobile antenna. BTECH rates it up to 3.5 dBi and includes the magnetic base, cable, PL-259 connector and handheld adapters.
For a first truck installation, that gives you one very useful advantage: you can prove that an external antenna solves your problem before drilling anything.
Put it high on a suitable metal surface, route the coax carefully into the cab, and you have a complete mobile antenna system.
I would also move away from the magnetic mount if the truck regularly sees branches, washboard roads or hard off-road use. A mechanical NMO mount is harder to knock out of position.
Best for: road trips, campground convoys, occasional trail use and anybody upgrading from a handheld without wanting to build a permanent 50-watt system yet.
Skip it if: you already know you want a permanent roof installation, extensive repeater/channel management or the strongest advanced mobile platform.
3. Best Long-Range Build — Wouxun KG-1000G Plus + Browning BR-450
The KG-1000G Plus earns this position because it is more than another 50-watt box.
Wouxun currently gives it 999 programmable memories, simultaneous reception, priority scanning, tone scanning, channel naming, four output-power levels, a detachable control head and broad receive coverage.
That is useful when your truck is part of a real radio setup rather than simply a way to talk to the vehicle ahead of you.
You can store multiple repeater profiles, name channels and organize the radio around different areas or trips instead of repeatedly changing tones on a small fixed channel list.
The BR-450 makes sense on the antenna side because it is a purpose-built UHF mobile antenna covering 450–470 MHz. Its published specification is 5.5 dBd, with a 5/8-over-5/8 design and 33-inch whip.
Unlike Midland’s pre-tuned MXTA26, however, the Browning comes with a cutting chart.
I would therefore treat the antenna installation as a real RF installation:
- Install the NMO mount correctly.
- Trim/tune the antenna conservatively for the frequencies you actually use.
- Check SWR with suitable UHF test equipment.
- Only remove more whip length after you know which direction the resonant point needs to move.
You can remove metal from a whip. You cannot put it back.
For the mount and feedline, the TRAM 1250 is a simple match because it combines a permanent 3/4-inch NMO mount with 17 feet of RG-58/U and an installed PL-259.
The KG-1000G Plus uses an SO-239 antenna connector, so the feedline connects without another stack of adapters.
That does not mean you should blindly drill a hole in the center of a modern truck roof.
Before drilling, confirm what is above and below the panel—headliner, airbags, roof wiring, reinforcement structures and factory antennas all matter. If you are unsure, have the NMO installed professionally.
Best for: rural driving, work trucks, serious repeater users, advanced scanning/channel plans and people who want the strongest long-term GMRS mobile platform.
Skip it if: you want a five-minute install or will only use one convoy channel on occasional trips.
4. Best Clean Install — MXT575 + MXTA25 Ghost + MXTA27
This setup gives up antenna height deliberately.
The MXTA25 Ghost is only 3.5 inches tall, which makes an enormous difference if the truck regularly enters:
- parking garages;
- carports;
- low tree cover;
- brushy trails;
- worksites where a long whip is easy to snag.
The lower-profile antenna is not merely cosmetic.
Midland rates it at 3 dB and specifically positions the current Range Pro Trail Kit around heavily obstructed terrain including forests and mountains.
That makes this a better setup than the MXTA26 for some trail environments despite the lower gain number.
The radio body can still remain completely out of sight because the MXT575’s display and normal controls live on the microphone.
Add a proper dash or console microphone holder and the only visible radio hardware can be the control mic.
Midland sells essentially this configuration as the MXT575SPKM Range Pro Trail Kit, with the MXT575, MXTA25, MXTA27 and a small external speaker. If the kit itself is unavailable, there is nothing special about the bundle that stops you assembling those same components individually.
Best for: daily drivers, parking garages, wooded trails, mountain routes and anybody who prioritizes a clean installation over maximum open-terrain antenna gain.
Skip it if: most of your driving is across wide flat country and you have room for a 32-inch whip.
The Antenna Matters More Than Most Truck Builds Admit
It is tempting to build this setup backward:

Do the opposite.
The antenna has to convert the radio’s RF power into a useful signal, and its location determines how much of the truck obstructs that signal.
A good 25-watt radio connected to a properly installed external antenna can therefore be a much better practical truck system than a 50-watt radio with a compromised antenna hidden below the cab line.
That is why I would upgrade the antenna installation before replacing the DB25-G simply because another radio says “50 watts.”
3 dB vs 6 dB: Higher Gain Is Not Automatically Better
This is the most important correction to the simplistic “buy the highest-gain antenna” advice.
An omnidirectional mobile antenna does not create RF power from nothing.
More gain concentrates the radiation pattern differently.
Midland’s current guidance explains the practical consequence:
- 2.1–3 dB: better suited to heavily obstructed terrain such as cities, dense forest and mountains;
- 3–6 dB: useful where there are some hills and scattered obstructions;
- 6.6–7.5 dB: better suited to wide-open plains and highways.
The MXTA26 sits around the higher-gain/open-country end of that spectrum.
The MXTA25 Ghost is the more logical truck antenna when the road disappears into steep or heavily wooded terrain.
Where Should You Mount a GMRS Antenna on a Truck?
Start with two rules:
- Put the antenna as high and clear as practical.
- Keep nearby metal and electronic accessories from surrounding it unnecessarily.
Midland specifically recommends mounting high and keeping the antenna away from light bars, GPS antennas, roof racks, air scoops and other sources of obstruction or interference.
Permanent roof NMO
This is the installation I prefer when maximum RF performance and long-term reliability matter more than avoiding a hole.
It gives the antenna a high, clear position with metal around the base and no magnetic mount to move.
It is also the installation with the highest consequence if done badly. Check roof airbags, wiring, reinforcement and headliner clearance first.
Lip mount
This is the best compromise for a lot of modern trucks.
A quality NMO lip mount can use the hood or another suitable body seam, avoids drilling the roof and still gives you a mechanically attached antenna.
The MXTA27 used in two of my recommended builds includes its own 20-foot coax run.
Magnetic mount
This is the easiest installation and the one I recommend for the budget build.
It is excellent for learning where an antenna works and for moving equipment between vehicles.
Its limitations are mechanical. A permanent work/off-road vehicle benefits from something that cannot slide or be pulled away as easily.
And, obviously, the mounting surface has to attract the magnet. If the relevant panel is aluminum or composite, choose another mounting method.
Bed rail or low mount behind the cab
I would avoid this when a higher clear location is available.
Antenna position can be more important than keeping the installation visually hidden. Surrounding the lower part of the antenna with the cab, rack or cargo changes the RF environment you worked so hard to improve.
Truck Coax: What Actually Matters
You do not need rigid base-station feedline snaking through the cab to build a good GMRS mobile.
The current Midland mobile mounts use RG-58U in roughly 20-foot runs, while a typical permanent NMO assembly such as the TRAM 1250 uses 17 feet of RG-58/U.
What matters is installing it properly:
- keep the run only as long as reasonably necessary;
- avoid sharp kinks;
- protect it anywhere it passes through metal;
- do not crush it in a door seal;
- keep it away from ignition and high-current wiring where practical;
- avoid a tight coil of unused cable under the dashboard;
- use the correct connector instead of stacking adapters.
Midland specifically recommends routing excess cable rather than tightly coiling or bundling it.
If you permanently shorten coax, install the replacement connector correctly. A poor connector can undo everything you gained with the better antenna.
Power Wiring: 25 Watts and 50 Watts Are Different Installations
The DB25-G is deliberately easy.
Radioddity supplies a vehicle accessory-socket power lead, so you can install the radio without immediately running a dedicated power harness through the firewall.
The MXT575 and KG-1000G Plus belong to the next class.
For a 50-watt permanent mobile, follow the manufacturer’s wiring instructions and use the supplied fused harness. The MXT575 documentation supports connection through the vehicle electrical system or directly to the battery depending on the installation.
Do not improvise with undersized accessory wiring simply because the plug physically fits.
Keep power wiring protected, fused and routed away from moving or hot engine components.
Do You Need 50 Watts?
Not always.
The DB25-G is rated at 25 watts and may already reach the vehicles and repeaters you care about once it is connected to a proper external antenna.
Fifty watts becomes more useful when:
- you regularly work near the edge of a repeater’s coverage;
- your simplex paths are genuinely difficult;
- you operate in relatively open country where antenna height and RF power can both be used effectively;
- you simply want the headroom of a permanent high-power mobile.
It will not make UHF bend through a mountain.
If a ridge completely blocks the path, another 25 watts is not the same thing as moving the antenna higher or accessing a well-placed repeater.
Should You Use a Handheld as Your Permanent Truck Radio?
A handheld can work in a truck, particularly when connected to a proper external antenna.
But once most of your operating happens from the vehicle, a mobile radio starts solving several problems at once:
- more transmit power where permitted;
- better power supply;
- permanent external antenna connection;
- larger speaker/audio;
- more convenient PTT;
- less wear on a handheld antenna connector.

Check SWR After a Permanent Antenna Install
For a pre-tuned GMRS antenna such as the Midland MXTA26, the installation should already put you close to the intended frequency range, but mounting location can still affect the system.
For a tunable antenna such as the Browning BR-450, checking SWR becomes much more important because you are responsible for getting the whip length right.
Do not trim a tunable antenna aggressively based on the printed chart alone.
Install it in its final location first, measure it, then make small changes.

What to Avoid
- Do not buy by wattage alone. The antenna system and RF path can matter more than the difference between a good 25-watt and 50-watt installation.
- Do not assume higher antenna gain is always better. Terrain changes the antenna pattern you actually want.
- Do not hide the antenna low behind the truck cab if a high clear mounting position is practical.
- Do not treat a cheap magnetic mount as automatically permanent. It is excellent for experimentation and casual use but mechanically less secure than a proper fixed NMO installation.
- Do not pinch coax through a door or sharp sheet-metal edge. Protect the cable and use an appropriate pass-through.
- Do not tightly coil a large amount of excess coax under the dash. Route the excess properly or shorten and reterminate it correctly.
- Do not place the antenna directly beside light bars, roof electronics or other antennas if you have a better location.
- Do not cut the Browning BR-450 aggressively before measuring the installed system. It is tunable; small cuts are permanent.
- Do not drill a roof NMO hole until you know what is behind the panel. Modern trucks may have wiring, curtain airbags and structural components above the headliner.
- Do not expect a 50-watt radio to overcome a mountain that completely blocks the path. Use better antenna position, elevation or a repeater.
