First: Choose the Radio Service Before the Radio
A beginner setup goes wrong very quickly when the radio is chosen before deciding who you actually want to communicate with.
If you have not decided which service fits your use, do that before buying antennas, microphones or batteries.
Best Ham Starter Setup — Yaesu FT-65R
For somebody starting with local analog amateur repeaters, the FT-65R remains one of the easiest radios to build around.
Yaesu currently specifies 5, 2.5 and 0.5 W power levels, a 1950 mAh supplied Li-ion battery, a one-watt front speaker and weather-alert scanning. A larger 2500 mAh battery is also available.
More importantly, it does not force a new operator into a digital ecosystem before they know whether they need one.
For the minimum useful setup, I would buy:
- the FT-65R;
- its supplied battery, charger and stock antenna;
- the programming cable only if computer programming will save you enough time;
- nothing else until you have used it.
Before blaming the radio because a repeater does not respond, verify the repeater frequency, offset and tone. Then try outside and from a higher position.

Best for: a straightforward first analog ham setup.
Do not add yet: a long antenna, speaker mic or second handheld simply because other people’s kits contain them.

For a beginner, that is already enough hardware.
I would start with:
- one UV-5G Plus;
- the stock antenna;
- the supplied battery and USB-C cable;
- the local simplex/repeater channels you actually expect to use.
Do not immediately buy a shoulder microphone, longer antenna, battery eliminator, adapter stack and second battery just because a bundle exists.
Use the radio first. The accessory should answer a problem you can name.
Best for: an inexpensive GMRS setup with enough programming flexibility to grow.
Do not add yet: a new antenna simply because it looks more substantial than the supplied one.

Phase 1: Program the Radio Before Buying Accessories
This is the highest-return beginner upgrade because it costs nothing.
For ham radio, check:
- repeater output frequency;
- correct transmit offset;
- CTCSS or DCS tone;
- whether the repeater is analog or digital;
- whether you are actually in its coverage area.
For GMRS, make sure the repeater channel, transmit tone and receive tone—if used—match the repeater.
A programming problem can look exactly like a range problem.

Phase 2: The First Accessory I Would Usually Buy — A Spare Battery
A spare battery is boring, which is exactly why it is useful.
It does not promise imaginary extra range. It simply keeps the radio working.
For a radio used regularly, a second charged pack is usually more useful than:
- a speaker microphone you rarely use;
- three different antennas;
- a desk full of adapters;
- a second handheld with almost the same capabilities.
Buy the exact battery specified for your exact radio model.
What About a Speaker Microphone?
A speaker mic is useful when the radio itself is clipped somewhere awkward—on a backpack strap, belt, seat or harness—and you want the PTT button and audio closer to your head.
It is not a range upgrade.
If the radio is already comfortable in your hand, pocket or shoulder strap, skip the speaker mic until you find a reason for it.

2026 GMRS Update: KG-945G Replaces the 935G Plus as My Fresh-Buy Step-Up
Our June setup video used the Wouxun KG-935G Plus as the rugged full-featured GMRS upgrade. That was the right recommendation when the video was recorded.
In August 2026, the KG-945G arrived as its direct evolution.
It keeps the core 935G Plus features—30 GMRS channels, 999 custom channels, simultaneous dual receive, Channel Wizard and weather reception—but adds:
- IP67 protection instead of IP66;
- a 3000 mAh battery instead of 2600 mAh;
- an improved flashlight;
- updated USB-powered desktop charging.
If you already own a KG-935G Plus, none of this gives you a reason to replace a radio that works.

Phase 3: Build an Emergency Backup Around the Radio You Already Know
An emergency kit is a bad place for a radio you have never programmed or used.
My basic handheld backup kit would contain:
- the radio you already know how to operate;
- a fully charged spare battery;
- AA/AAA battery case only if your exact model supports one and you intend to use it;
- charging cable;
- a written or printed list of important channels/repeaters;
- a small protective pouch;
- earpiece or speaker mic only if your operating plan actually needs one.
The written channel plan is one of the cheapest and most useful items on that list.
A radio with 999 memories does not help much if you cannot remember which channel is the local repeater when the phone containing your notes is dead.
Phase 4: Fix Range Without Replacing the Radio
Handheld range is often an antenna-position problem before it is a transmitter problem.
ARRL specifically recommends gaining height and getting clear of obstructions, and notes that the compact stock “rubber duck” antenna is designed around convenience rather than maximum efficiency.
Try this before spending:
- Go outside.
- Hold the radio upright.
- Move away from buildings and vehicles.
- Try a higher location.
- Move a few feet if you may be sitting in a multipath dead spot.
If that changes everything, you have learned something important: the radio may be fine.

If You Still Need a Screw-On Antenna
For ham operation, a properly matched 2 m/70 cm antenna such as the Diamond SRH77CA/SRJ77CA family is a sensible next step when it fits the radio correctly.
For GMRS, use a genuinely GMRS-tuned antenna. The Nagoya NA-771G is tuned around the 462 MHz GMRS range rather than simply being a generic long whip.

Do not buy adapters automatically. A direct-fit antenna keeps the connector stack simpler and puts less leverage on the handheld’s antenna jack.
Best Fixed-Position Range Upgrade — N9TAX Slim Jim
A roll-up Slim Jim solves a completely different problem from a longer screw-on whip.
You hang it vertically from a tree, balcony, mast or other elevated support and get the antenna away from your body, furniture and ground-level obstructions.
N9TAX’s design requires no ground plane and the integrated-cable versions include RG-58 feedline, a ferrite choke and weather-sealed construction.
But buy the version tuned for your service:
Best for: home, campsite, balcony, park or other stationary operation where you can put the antenna higher than the handheld.

Phase 5: Solve the Vehicle’s “Metal Box” Problem
A handheld inside a vehicle has one obvious disadvantage: its antenna is inside a large metal structure.
Before buying a higher-power handheld, move the antenna outside.
Ham Vehicle Setup — Nagoya UT-72
The UT-72 is a straightforward magnetic-mount 2 m/70 cm antenna with coax already attached.
It lets you test the external-antenna concept without drilling a permanent NMO hole.
GMRS Vehicle Setup — Nagoya UT-72G
The UT-72G is the GMRS-tuned version and is centered around 155/462 MHz.
BTECH currently supplies about 13 feet of RG-58A/U coax, a PL-259 connection and SMA adapters for handheld use. The magnetic mount requires suitable metal underneath it to provide the intended ground plane.
When to Stop Upgrading the Handheld
A handheld is excellent when portability is part of the job.
Once most of your operation happens from a vehicle or a desk, buying more handheld accessories can become a very expensive way to avoid buying the correct type of radio.
If Most of Your Ham Operating Is From a Vehicle or Desk

That is a fundamentally different installation from an HT: higher-power radio, proper external antenna and a suitable power system.

Something like the Midland MXT275 is the logical progression from an HT plus magnetic antenna.

If HF Is the Real Goal, Stop Buying VHF/UHF Accessories
This applies to ham operators specifically.
If the reason you got licensed was HF, a third handheld antenna and second VHF/UHF radio may move you sideways rather than toward the operating you actually want.
Use what you already have for local communication and work toward the licence privileges and HF station that match your real goal.

The Three Accessory Traps That Waste the Most Money
- Buying an antenna before checking the connector and tuning. A long antenna is not automatically the right antenna, and the ham and GMRS versions of apparently similar products may be tuned differently.
- Buying a speaker mic to fix range. It changes where your PTT button and speaker are. It does not move the RF antenna outside a building or vehicle.
- Buying another handheld before diagnosing the first one. If changing location fixes the contact, the limitation may be terrain or antenna placement rather than the transceiver.
- Assuming every battery from the same brand fits. Verify the exact model number before ordering a spare pack, charger or battery eliminator.
- Buying a pile of adapters. Use the correct direct-fit antenna or cable whenever practical, especially when a long antenna can place extra leverage on the handheld connector.
- Turning the vehicle into a permanent handheld installation. If the radio never leaves the car, compare a proper mobile radio before adding more accessories to the HT.
