Why the 878 Still Makes Sense in 2026
The AT-D878UVII Plus is no longer the newest-looking DMR platform, and that is partly why it remains easy to recommend. DMR has a steeper setup curve than an ordinary analog handheld, so years of documentation, codeplug examples and operator familiarity have real value.
Current AnyTone specifications list 4,000 channels, 10,000 talkgroups and 500,000 digital contacts, along with dual-band analog/DMR operation, GPS and roaming. The Plus model also brings Bluetooth and APRS capability, so it can grow well beyond basic repeater use.
Wholly Outdoor’s original review also found the radio worked well in both digital and analog modes, praised its Bluetooth connection and front-panel programmability, and liked the battery performance. It also identified two limitations worth keeping: the enclosure is only IP54-rated and the APRS implementation was not flawless.
Front-panel programming is useful when you need to make a quick change, but I would not buy an 878 expecting to build a complete DMR system from the keypad. A structured CPS codeplug is still the sane way to manage repeaters, talkgroups, contacts and zones.

Radioddity GD-168 — Best Lower-Cost Modern Entry
A Better Budget Direction Than Chasing an Old GD-77
The GD-168 is the budget path I would look at before buying one of the older DMR radios that still appears in years-old “best of” lists. Radioddity currently gives it 4,000 channels, 10,000 talkgroups and capacity for 500,000 contacts, which is enough for a large amateur DMR configuration.
Its most practical modernization is USB-C: Radioddity specifies the same Type-C connection for charging and programming. The package also includes two batteries and the company provides its own CPS download path, while listing RT Systems compatibility.
There is one reason I would ignore the marketing around transmit power. Radioddity’s current page describes the GD-168 as a 5 W radio in several places, but the detailed transmitter specification lower on the same page lists higher VHF/UHF output figures. That internal conflict makes wattage a poor reason to choose it.
Fortunately, wattage should not drive this purchase anyway. A clean codeplug, access to the right repeater and a usable antenna will matter much more than arguing over a small handheld-power difference.

Buy It for the Receiver Architecture, Not Because It Is New
The DA-7X2 is the most interesting newer option in this group because it has a reason to exist beyond a refreshed case or USB connector. BTECH specifies true simultaneous VHF/UHF dual receive, so you can genuinely monitor activity on both bands rather than relying on simple alternating dual-watch behavior.
BTECH also lists DMR Tier I/II two-slot support, 4,000 channels, 250 zones, 10,000 talkgroups and 500,000 contacts, plus Bluetooth, GPS, APRS and roaming. That puts the core DMR capacity in the same serious-user class as the 878 while changing the radio architecture around it.
It is also a newer platform. That is not automatically a disadvantage, but I would not spend more simply to own the newest model. If your normal use is one local DMR repeater and occasional analog FM, the additional receiver hardware may provide little practical benefit.
If you monitor VHF and UHF heavily, work events, travel with the radio, or specifically want simultaneous dual-band reception, the DA-7X2 becomes a much more rational upgrade.

Start with the RF path. Search RepeaterBook for nearby DMR repeaters, then check the repeater owner’s page or local club information for the details that actually matter: input/output frequencies, color code, permitted time slots, network and available talkgroups.

What Is a DMR Codeplug?
A codeplug is the configuration that tells the radio how your DMR system is organized. Think of it as much more than a list of frequencies.
An analog repeater memory might need a receive frequency, transmit offset and CTCSS tone. A DMR channel normally adds several digital choices on top of that.

Why DMR Has Two Time Slots
DMR uses two-slot TDMA. On a DMR carrier, the radio alternates transmission opportunities between two time slots. This allows a properly configured system to support two independent communication paths on one 12.5 kHz radio channel.
For the operator, the important part is simple: Time Slot 1 and Time Slot 2 are not interchangeable just because both exist. Use the slot assigned by the repeater owner or network configuration.
This is another reason a random codeplug from another city can fail. The frequencies might look correct while the talkgroup, time slot or color code is wrong.
Talkgroups: The Part That Makes DMR Feel Different
A DMR talkgroup is a logical destination rather than a separate RF frequency. On BrandMeister, for example, talkgroups work like virtual rooms identified by numbers. They may represent a region, club, activity or wider community.
Static Talkgroups
A static talkgroup is configured to remain active on the repeater or hotspot, so incoming network traffic for that talkgroup is sent to it without a local user first activating it.
Dynamic Talkgroups
A dynamic talkgroup is activated by local user activity and later times out according to the network/server rules. On a repeater, you still need to use the correct time slot when activating it.
Do not assume every DMR repeater follows the same static/dynamic arrangement. The repeater owner decides how the local system is configured, so local documentation outranks a generic codeplug tutorial.
Do You Need a DMR Hotspot?
Not necessarily. If you can reliably reach an active local DMR repeater, start there. A hotspot becomes valuable when you cannot reach the repeaters you want, you want predictable network access from home, or you travel and want a small personal RF gateway.

The hotspot is not a magic programming shortcut. Your radio still needs a properly configured DMR channel. For BrandMeister, the radio and hotspot generally need matching RF frequency and color-code settings, while the CPS contains the talkgroups you want to use.
BrandMeister also requires MMDVM/Homebrew hotspots to use a Hotspot Security password configured through SelfCare. This is separate from simply typing your callsign and Radio ID into a hotspot.
When I Would Buy a Hotspot
- There is no usable DMR repeater near home.
- The nearby repeater does not carry the network or talkgroups you want.
- You want a small personal DMR gateway for travel.

Do Not Download a Giant Random Codeplug and Upload It Blindly
A shared codeplug can save a huge amount of typing, especially when a local club maintains one for your exact radio. It can also create a mess when it was built for a different firmware version, another region or a different repeater network.
Before writing a downloaded file to the radio, confirm:
- It is intended for your exact radio model.
- It is compatible with your current CPS/firmware.
- The frequencies and repeater offsets are legal and correct for your area.
- The color codes and time slots match the current repeater configuration.
- The talkgroups match the network actually used by those repeaters.
- Your own Radio ID and callsign information are correct.

Should You Import the Entire DMR Contact Database?
Not necessarily. Large contact capacity is useful because the radio can display callsign information for many transmitting stations, but a huge database does not make the radio communicate better.
If your radio supports hundreds of thousands of contacts and you want worldwide caller information, importing a current contact database can be convenient. But keep the distinction clear:
Do not confuse a 500,000-contact specification with “500,000 people ready to talk to me.” It is database capacity, not proof of local DMR activity.
A Word About Encryption on Amateur DMR
The fact that an amateur-capable DMR radio has an encryption menu does not make that feature appropriate on amateur frequencies. Operators outside the United States should follow their own national amateur-radio regulations.
What to Avoid
- Do not buy an obsolete recommendation just because an old article still ranks it highly. Radioddity now marks the once-popular GD-77 product variants as discontinued.
- Do not choose by wattage. A small handheld-power difference will not repair a bad codeplug, poor antenna location or inability to reach the repeater.
- Do not assume every DMR repeater uses BrandMeister. Find the actual network and local operating rules first.
- Do not guess the time slot or color code. Get them from the repeater owner, club or current repeater information.
- Do not make your first codeplug enormous. Prove one channel first.
- Do not treat a hotspot as a cure for bad programming. A hotspot adds another configuration layer.
- Do not enable commercial-radio encryption on U.S. amateur frequencies. A feature in the menu is not automatically legal in the amateur service.
