Icom IC-7300MK2: the one to consider for FT8, logging and remote operation
The IC-7300MK2 changes the decision enough that it deserves a separate branch on a permanent-shack page. It is still a compact 100 W HF/6 m direct-sampling radio with a built-in tuner and the familiar 4.3-inch Icom touchscreen, but the biggest improvements are around the station rather than on the front panel.
The new USB-C connection provides two virtual COM ports plus audio input and output. That means, for example, FT8 software and logging/contest software can communicate with the radio at the same time through one USB cable. For a computer-heavy station, that is far more useful than simply adding another receive feature.
Ethernet is built in as well. With Icom’s RS-BA1 Version 2 software, the radio can act as the remote station endpoint without leaving another computer running beside it. HDMI lets the operating screen, waterfall and menus appear on a full-size monitor, while separate RX-ANT IN/OUT connections make it easier to integrate a receive-only antenna, external filter or preamplifier.
Icom also specifies improved close-in RMDR and lower phase noise compared with the original IC-7300, while transmit current remains 21 A at 100 W. It is therefore a particularly strong choice when the shack is being designed around a computer rather than added to one later.
I have not made it the default pick solely because it is newer. If you do not need Ethernet remote operation, HDMI, RX antenna routing or its enhanced USB arrangement, those improvements may not be worth reorganizing the buying decision around.

1. Yaesu FT-710 AESS
The FT-710 is my starting point because a permanent station does not need to be physically enormous or extremely expensive to be a serious HF shack. It gives you 100 W on HF and 6 meters, a strong modern SDR receiver, useful interference-reduction tools and an automatic antenna tuner without consuming the budget that should still be going toward your antenna and DC supply.
For daily use, the 4.3-inch touchscreen provides a spectrum scope and waterfall, while the DVI-D connector lets you move the visual information onto a larger monitor. The AESS package also includes the SP-40 external speaker, so there is less reason to immediately start adding accessories simply because the station is permanent.
Digital operation is also straightforward. USB and Yaesu’s FT8 preset make this much more suitable as a modern computer-connected shack radio than a transceiver whose USB connection only handles CAT commands.
The honest limitation is the user interface. Yaesu gives you extensive DSP and operating controls, but some settings take more menu familiarity than on Icom’s touchscreen-first approach. If you know that is going to annoy you every evening, the specification advantage does not compensate for an interface you dislike using.
Best for: a new or upgrading General who wants a strong permanent 100 W station while retaining enough budget for antenna, feedline and power.
Skip it if: you want a large knob-first desktop radio or genuinely need two independent receivers.

2. Kenwood TS-890S
The TS-890S makes sense when the permanent part of “permanent shack” actually matters. It weighs about 34.8 pounds, has a seven-inch display and is built around the assumption that the operator may sit in front of it for hours rather than carry it to a picnic table.
Kenwood uses a down-conversion double-superheterodyne receiver with narrow roofing filters ahead of its DSP stages. That gives the radio strong adjacent-signal filtering and extensive control over how the receiver responds in crowded conditions. Its filter-scope display also keeps the selected roofing filter, IF passband, notch position and other receive information visible.
The reason I give it this award, though, is ergonomics. Kenwood explicitly designed basic operation around physical knobs and switches with tactile feedback rather than making the touchscreen the primary interface. For an operator who tunes, adjusts filters and changes settings constantly, that can matter more over several years than whether a competing radio has a newer-looking menu.
The 7-inch scope, DVI-I external display support, USB audio and network remote capabilities keep it from being an old-fashioned radio in the connectivity sense. Its built-in ATU covers the amateur bands from 1.8 through 50 MHz.
But this is not a rational upgrade just because you want “something better.” It draws up to 22.5 A on transmit and occupies substantially more desk space than the FT-710. Buy it because its receiver and operator interface solve problems you actually have.
Best for: operators who spend long sessions tuning and filtering signals and prefer tactile front-panel control.
Skip it if: casual SSB, FT8 and normal everyday HF are your main activities and spending the difference would improve the antenna.
3. Icom IC-7610
The IC-7610 is the radio on this page where one hardware feature fundamentally changes what the station can do: it contains two independent receiver signal paths rather than simply switching one receiver rapidly between two frequencies.
Icom gives each path its own DIGI-SEL preselector, band-pass-filter network and analog-to-digital converter. That allows you to listen to both sides of a split DX operation or monitor another band for a contest multiplier while keeping the main station active. The two receivers also have their own spectrum scopes on the seven-inch touchscreen.
A permanent shack can make use of the additional connections too. There are two SO-239 transmit antenna connectors, dedicated receive antenna IN/OUT, DVI-D external-display output, Ethernet remote operation and USB I/Q output that can feed compatible SDR software.
Icom specifies 23 A transmit consumption at 100 W, so this is another radio that belongs behind a properly sized 13.8 V supply rather than a marginal bench supply.
The honest question is whether you actually need two receivers. If you normally call CQ, rag-chew, work FT8 or tune one station at a time, a great deal of the IC-7610’s additional cost is paying for capability that may sit unused.
Best for: serious DX, split operation, contesting and operators who genuinely use simultaneous independent receive.
Skip it if: you mainly want a good single-receiver 100 W shack and could use the price difference to build a substantially better antenna system.

The best base-station feature is often the one you touch every day
Receiver specifications matter, but a permanent station changes the importance of ergonomics. The radio may be used hundreds of evenings over several years. Display readability, tuning feel, filter access, audio quality, computer integration and whether common functions are one button or three menu layers deep become real ownership differences.
That is why this page does not simply rank the radios by receiver laboratory numbers. The TS-890S can be the right choice for someone who lives on the front panel, while the IC-7300MK2 can be the better station for someone whose operating position is built around WSJT-X, logging software and remote access.
How to choose an HF radio for a permanent shack
1. Build the station budget before choosing the radio
The mistake to avoid is spending the entire budget on the transceiver. A 100 W desktop radio still needs a power supply, an antenna and feedline. A permanent outdoor installation may also need switching, lightning protection, grounding/bonding hardware and test equipment.
If buying the TS-890S or IC-7610 means using a poor antenna for the next two years, I would buy the FT-710 and improve everything connected to it. The antenna affects every signal you transmit and receive.

2. A 100 W radio needs a properly sized power supply
These are not devices to run from a small 10 A bench supply. The TS-890S can draw up to 22.5 A while transmitting and the IC-7610 is specified at 23 A at 100 W. The IC-7300MK2 is specified at 21 A.
I would not size the supply exactly to the radio’s maximum published draw. Give the station sensible current headroom and choose a supply known for low RF noise.

3. Receiver performance matters most when another signal is close
Sensitivity alone does not tell you how pleasant an HF radio will be on a crowded band. The harder problem is hearing a weak station while another operator nearby in frequency is extremely strong.
Roofing filters, preselectors, local-oscillator phase noise, reciprocal-mixing dynamic range and DSP filtering all contribute to how the receiver behaves in that environment.
If you mainly operate quiet bands or digital modes with narrow software filtering, spending heavily for the strongest possible receiver may not improve the station as much as improving the antenna.
4. True dual receive is valuable only if your operating uses it
Two receivers are useful for a rare DX station working split, monitoring two bands, chasing contest multipliers or keeping one frequency active while searching another.
That does not make dual receive universally better. If you operate one frequency at a time, a strong single-receiver radio is simpler and leaves substantially more money for the rest of the station.
5. Decide whether your shack is screen-first or knob-first
A large spectrum display is genuinely useful. It shows band activity, nearby signals and interference immediately. But the screen is only half of the user interface.
The TS-890S is deliberately knob-and-switch heavy. The Icom radios use touch interaction much more extensively. The FT-710 sits somewhere between the two.
If possible, operate the front panel before spending this much money. A control philosophy that feels intuitive to one operator can frustrate another every time the radio is turned on.
6. An external monitor can be more useful than paying for a larger radio display
A permanent shack has room for a real monitor. The FT-710 provides DVI-D output, the TS-890S offers DVI-I, the IC-7610 provides DVI-D, and the IC-7300MK2 introduces HDMI.
If the radio will always sit beside a computer monitor, consider whether buying the transceiver with the largest integrated screen is really the best use of the budget.
7. USB audio is more important than “has USB”
For FT8 and other sound-card digital modes, the useful question is whether the radio can pass both control data and transmit/receive audio to the computer cleanly.
The IC-7300MK2 goes further by providing two virtual COM ports plus audio through one USB-C connection. That is particularly useful when logging software and digital-mode software both need simultaneous control access.
8. Remote operation should be considered before the shack is finished
Remote operation is much easier when networking is part of the radio or station plan from the beginning. The IC-7610 and IC-7300MK2 include Ethernet-based Icom remote capability, while the TS-890S supports direct-IP remote control.
If remote operation is likely, think about station power control, network reliability, antenna switching and equipment that may need to be reset while nobody is physically in the shack.
9. A built-in tuner is convenient, not magical
All three main recommendations include automatic antenna tuners. That does not mean they can efficiently match any random wire on every band.
Internal tuners normally handle a limited impedance range. They are excellent for trimming a reasonably matched antenna as you move around the band, but they do not repair broken coax or make a poor antenna efficient.

10. Plan receive antennas and additional antenna ports only when you need them
The IC-7610 and IC-7300MK2 provide dedicated receive-antenna connections, which can be valuable with loops, beverages, external filters or other specialized receiving systems.
That is a meaningful feature for an advanced station, but it should not convince a first-time HF operator to spend thousands more before even installing the first transmit antenna.
What to avoid
Do not buy the dream radio and build the rest of the station from leftovers.
A premium receiver cannot recover signal that a poor antenna never captured, and a beautiful waterfall does not supply 23 amps of clean DC power.
I would rather see a permanent shack built around the FT-710 with a good antenna, low-loss feedline and properly sized supply than an IC-7610 sitting behind a compromised antenna because the transceiver consumed the entire budget.
Also avoid paying for true dual receive, external RX antenna routing, network remote control or contest-grade filtering simply because those features sound advanced. They are valuable when your operating actually uses them.

For a normal permanent home station, I would start with the Yaesu FT-710 AESS. It provides 100 W, a strong receiver, built-in tuner, spectrum display and useful computer connectivity while leaving more of the station budget available for the antenna and power supply.
Is the Kenwood TS-890S worth the extra money?
It can be when you value its down-conversion receiver, roofing filters and physical-control-heavy operating style. If your normal use is relaxed SSB and digital modes, spending the difference on a better antenna may improve the station more.
Why would I need two receivers in an HF radio?

Do I need an external speaker for an HF base station?
Not automatically. Use the radio first and decide whether its internal or supplied speaker is actually limiting intelligibility. The FT-710 AESS already includes the SP-40 speaker, so buying another speaker immediately would usually be unnecessary.
Do I need an external antenna tuner if the radio has one built in?
Not when the antenna is already close enough to the impedance range the internal tuner can handle. An external or remote tuner becomes useful when the antenna system needs a wider matching range or the tuner needs to sit closer to the feed point.
