If your repeaters use System Fusion: Yaesu FTM-310DR Series
Digital voice is an ecosystem decision, not a premium upgrade. If your local club and repeaters use Yaesu System Fusion, I would look at the current FTM-310DR series rather than paying for one of the analog-only radios above and replacing it later.
The FTM-310DR combines analog FM and C4FM, delivers up to 55 W on VHF and 50 W on UHF, provides true dual receive and includes GPS/APRS capability. There is also an ASP version for operators who specifically want Yaesu’s additional receive-audio processing.

The best mobile ham radios in detail
1. Icom IC-2730A
The IC-2730A is the radio I would put first for someone who has outgrown a handheld and wants a conventional dual-band mobile that is easy to live with every day. The reason is not that it has more features than everything else. It is that the controls make sense.
Each side has its own tuning, volume and squelch controls, and the radio can receive VHF/VHF, UHF/UHF or VHF/UHF simultaneously. That is useful when you want to keep a local repeater on one side while monitoring a calling frequency, another repeater or weather traffic on the other.
Output is 50 W on both VHF and UHF, with lower 15 W and 5 W settings. More importantly for installation planning, Icom specifies approximately 13 A current drain while transmitting. This is why a mobile rig belongs on properly sized DC wiring rather than being treated like a phone charger plugged into whatever accessory socket happens to be convenient.
The controller can be installed separately from the main radio body, and Icom offers mounting and Bluetooth hardware as options. That flexibility is useful in modern cars where there may be nowhere sensible to mount a full radio.
The limitation is equally clear: this is an analog FM radio. If you know your local activity revolves around System Fusion, D-STAR or DMR, choose the digital ecosystem first rather than paying for the IC-2730A because it happens to be my default analog pick.
Best for: drivers who value clear physical controls, true dual receive and a conventional analog mobile.
Skip it if: digital voice or built-in APRS is already on your must-have list.
2. Yaesu FTM-150R ASP
The FTM-150R ASP makes sense for someone who still wants an analog mobile but places more weight on weak-signal reception, flexible installation and audio than on keeping the interface as basic as possible.
It supplies up to 55 W on VHF and 50 W on UHF and uses two receivers, allowing V/V, U/U, V/U and U/V monitoring. The control head detaches from the radio body, which means the larger heat-producing chassis can live under a seat or elsewhere while the controls stay within easy reach.
The reason I would choose the ASP version specifically is Yaesu’s Super-DX and Audio Digital Signal Processing combination. Super-DX is intended to increase receive sensitivity, while ASP processes weak/noisy received audio to make it easier to understand. That is a real use case, not simply another feature for the specification table.
The front control head also contains a 3 W speaker and works with the 3 W main-body speaker for up to 6 W of combined receive audio. That can matter in a noisy vehicle where a handheld’s tiny speaker is struggling against road noise.
The limitation is that all of this remains analog FM. If you are buying because your club operates System Fusion, the FTM-310DR series is the Yaesu branch I would investigate instead.
Best for: analog operators dealing with marginal signals, noisy vehicles or installations where a remote control head is particularly useful.
Skip it if: you need C4FM digital voice, APRS or the simplest possible analog interface.
3. BTECH UV-50PRO
The UV-50PRO is here for a very different buyer. If you enjoy APRS, location data, Bluetooth programming, packet interfaces and experimenting with connected features, this is much more interesting than buying a traditional analog mobile purely because it has familiar knobs.
BTECH rates the radio for up to 50 W VHF/UHF operation and builds GPS, APRS tools and Bluetooth app programming into the platform. The companion app can handle channels, tones, offsets and groups, which is convenient when you want to make changes without connecting a laptop and programming cable in the vehicle.
It also includes features that are uncommon on a basic analog mobile, including a KISS TNC mode, satellite-oriented tools and AI noise reduction. If those words immediately sound useful to you, that is the reason to put the UV-50PRO on the shortlist.
If they sound like unnecessary complexity, buy the Icom instead. A simpler radio that you can operate confidently is better than a feature-rich radio whose capabilities stay buried in menus and software.
The other consideration is maturity. The UV-50PRO is a much newer platform than the long-established IC-2730A, so buyers who prioritize years of field history over evolving software features may prefer the established analog choices.
Best for: operators who specifically want APRS/GPS, phone-based programming, packet connectivity and modern software features.
Skip it if: your goal is simply to turn on the radio, select a repeater and operate with traditional front-panel controls.
How to choose a mobile ham radio
1. A 50 W radio needs a real power installation
Moving from a handheld to a mobile radio is not simply swapping a 5 W box for a 50 W box. The electrical requirements change with it. A current 50 W-class radio can draw well into double-digit amps during transmit; for example, Icom specifies approximately 13 A for the IC-2730A at transmit.
Follow the radio manual and your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance for two-way-radio installations. Do not simply assume that a cigarette-lighter or accessory socket is appropriate because the plug physically fits. Power wiring needs appropriate conductor size and fusing, with the fuse positioned as required by the radio and vehicle installation guidance.

2. The antenna usually matters more than choosing 50 W versus 55 W
Do not make the same mistake people make when comparing handhelds: choosing the radio because one specification says 55 W and another says 50 W. That difference is rarely the thing deciding whether you reach a repeater.
The external antenna, its location, the vehicle body beneath it, feedline loss and terrain normally have far more practical influence. On a suitable vehicle, a properly located roof antenna can give the mobile station a much better radio horizon than an antenna hidden low on the vehicle or inside the passenger compartment.

3. Decide where the control head can actually go
Modern dashboards often leave almost no flat space for a radio. This is why detachable or remotely mountable control heads matter much more than they appear to in a specification comparison.
Before ordering, sit in the driver’s seat and decide where the display, microphone and radio body can safely live without blocking airbags, visibility, vehicle controls or normal movement. A beautiful radio that has nowhere safe to mount is the wrong radio for that vehicle.
4. Physical controls matter when the vehicle is moving
Menus that are perfectly acceptable at a desk can become irritating in a moving vehicle. This is the strongest reason I like the IC-2730A for ordinary analog mobile work: separate tuning, volume and squelch controls let you make common changes without repeatedly navigating menus.
If you prefer programming and controlling features through a phone, however, that same traditional layout may matter less. That is where the UV-50PRO becomes a more logical option.
5. True dual receive is different from fast scanning
If you want to monitor two active frequencies at once, look for genuine dual-receiver capability rather than assuming every “dual-band” radio does the same thing. The IC-2730A and FTM-150R ASP can simultaneously monitor combinations such as VHF/VHF, UHF/UHF and VHF/UHF.
That is useful if you regularly monitor a club repeater while keeping another channel available for calling, public-service activity or another local group.
6. Choose the digital ecosystem before the radio
If you already know that your local activity revolves around System Fusion, DMR or D-STAR, that should influence the purchase before display size or maximum output power.

7. Programming still matters
A mobile radio may hold hundreds or thousands of memories, but that is useful only if you have a manageable way to load them. Check manufacturer software, app programming and supported cable requirements before the radio arrives.

What to avoid
Do not buy the radio first and figure out the installation later.
A mobile radio needs power, an antenna, feedline, mounting space and a safe route for the wiring. Before ordering the transceiver, know where the radio body, control head, microphone, power cable and antenna are going to live.
I would also avoid choosing solely on output power. The practical difference between 50 W and 55 W is far less important than moving from a poor antenna installation to a good one.
Finally, do not pay for a digital mode because it sounds more advanced. Pay for it when the repeaters and operators you want to use are actually on that system.

Is a 50 W mobile radio much better than a 5 W handheld?
It gives you substantially more transmit power, but the real advantage of a mobile installation is usually the combination of higher power and a properly positioned external antenna. A 50 W radio connected to a poor antenna can still disappoint.
Can I power a 50 W ham radio from the cigarette-lighter socket?
Do not assume that you can. Current mobile radios can draw double-digit amps on transmit, and vehicle accessory circuits vary. Follow the transceiver manual and the vehicle manufacturer’s two-way-radio installation guidance for the correct power connection and fusing.
Can I use a mobile ham radio as a base station?

Do I need a dual-band mobile radio?
If both 2 m and 70 cm are active around you, a dual-band mobile keeps your options open and may let you monitor both at once. If nearly all local activity is on one band, a single-band radio can still be a perfectly rational choice.
Should my mobile radio have APRS?
Only if you intend to use it. APRS can be useful for position reporting, messaging and related packet applications, but it should not automatically outweigh simpler controls or receiver performance. The UV-50PRO is our main pick here when APRS is specifically part of your use case.
Should I buy an analog or digital mobile ham radio?
Start with what is used locally. If the repeaters and operators you want to communicate with are analog FM, an analog mobile is enough. If your area actively uses System Fusion, DMR or D-STAR, choose the appropriate ecosystem first and then compare radios within it.
